The Bighorn Sheep Photos

 Bighorn Sheep, Bull |
The bighorn sheep is an endangered species and rare to see in its native habitat in California. I had a near-encounter when I hiked to the top of Teutonia Peak (5,627') in the Mojave National Preserve a few years ago. As I approached the peak, I came upon what would be cowpies, but no self-respecting cattle would be grazing this high up on such a rocky slope. Clearly these were left by desert bighorns, but they had left their mark and moved on. Even as I reached the top and looked all around, the elusive sheep were nowhere in sight.
I had a wonderful opportunity to see Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep from the window of a now-defunct train, the Cariboo Prospector, which ran from Vancouver to Prince George in British Columbia. One of the most scenic train rides in the world, it sadly ended its run in 2002.So, I'm happy to see and photograph bighorns in protected environments like zoos. There are a number of photographs here of bighorn sheep shot in the Wild Animal Park near San Diego, and some in the Los Angeles Zoo.
